Keloid scars are raised, thickened areas of skin that can develop after injury or surgery. Two effective options for treating keloids are intralesional injections of triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) and topical or injected 5-fluorouracil solution.
Triamcinolone acetonide is a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, flatten the scar or cyst, and relieve symptoms such as itching or tenderness. It is injected directly into the keloid, usually at intervals of several weeks, and may require multiple sessions for best results.
5-fluorouracil is a medication that interferes with abnormal scar tissue growth. It can be used alone or in combination with triamcinolone, either as an injection or topical solution, to further soften and reduce the size of the keloid.
Both treatments are generally well tolerated. Some mild discomfort, redness, or temporary thinning of the skin at the injection site may occur. Improvement is gradual, and several treatments may be needed to achieve the desired outcome.
Pricing is per treatment. We recommend one injection per month x 3 months for best results.
